Preparing Students and Parents for Today’s Online Risks

Student & Parent Cyber Safety Presentations | Michigan | 2025

The online world students navigate is changing quickly.

Social media, gaming, smartphones and online predators remain important cyber safety concerns, but students and families are now facing rapidly developing challenges such as artificial intelligence and deepfakes.

In 2025, Cyber Safety Consulting worked with middle and high schools in Michigan to help approximately 2,000 students and parents better understand today’s online risks and learn practical ways to protect themselves.

The Challenge: Helping Students Protect Themselves Online

The schools had a clear goal: they wanted students to learn how to better protect themselves online.

One area of particular concern was the growing influence of AI and deepfakes.

As artificial intelligence makes it increasingly easy to create or manipulate realistic-looking images, videos and other content, students need the skills to question what they encounter online and recognize potential risks.

Cyber safety education needs to evolve along with the technology students use every day.

Interactive Cyber Safety Education for Students and Parents

Cyber Safety Consulting provided age-appropriate, interactive sessions for students in grades 6–12, along with cyber safety education for parents.

The presentations were designed to make online safety understandable and relevant to the audiences rather than simply presenting a list of rules.

Students learned about the risks they may encounter online and practical ways they can help protect themselves.

Parents received information designed to increase their own understanding of online safety so they could better support conversations and decisions about technology at home.

Addressing Today’s Digital Challenges

The program addressed a broad range of cyber safety and digital citizenship topics, including:

Covering these issues together helps students understand that online safety isn’t about a single app, device or threat. It is about developing the knowledge and habits needed to make safer choices throughout their digital lives.

The Impact: Recognizing Online Dangers

Following the presentations, many participants learned how to recognize online dangers and better protect themselves.

That is an important part of effective cyber safety education.

Students cannot avoid every online risk, but they can learn how to recognize warning signs, think more carefully about their online interactions and know when they should seek help from a trusted adult.

Parents also responded positively to the program and appreciated the opportunity to increase their own knowledge about online safety.

Extending Cyber Safety Education to Educators

The impact of the program also created an opportunity for the schools to continue building their cyber safety knowledge.

Following the student and parent sessions, the schools expressed interest in having Cyber Safety Consulting return for follow-up educator sessions.

Bringing students, parents and educators into the conversation can help create a more consistent approach to online safety.

Students receive practical education about the digital world they encounter every day. Parents gain information they can use at home. Educators become better prepared to recognize and respond to issues affecting students at school.

Why Cyber Safety Education Must Keep Evolving

The online risks facing students do not remain the same from year to year.

New social platforms emerge. Artificial intelligence continues to develop. Deepfakes become more convincing. Scams change. New games, apps and online trends become popular.

That means cyber safety education cannot remain static.

Schools need opportunities to help students understand both established online risks and emerging technologies—while reinforcing the critical thinking and decision-making skills that can help them navigate whatever comes next.
